Quick answer: A mass tort is not automatically a class action. In a federal MDL, cases sharing factual questions can be coordinated for pretrial proceedings, but centralization does not prove liability, guarantee a settlement or mean every claimant qualifies.
Primary-source checks: Federal MDL status is checked against the U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation and the relevant federal court. Product-safety issues are checked against FDA Drug Safety communications and other claim-specific government sources.

How TortAdvisor Reviews Litigation

Mass tort lawsuits and MDL proceedings can change quickly. For mass tort lawsuits, TortAdvisor separates confirmed procedural facts from allegations, settlement estimates and predictions, and prioritizes JPML, federal courts, regulators and other primary sources whenever they are reasonably available.

1. Verify the legal forumCheck JPML, federal district-court pages, official dockets and government program pages to confirm MDL or case status.
2. Label allegations accuratelyClaims made by plaintiffs are described as allegations unless established by a court, regulator, admission or other reliable record.
3. Cite near the claimImportant procedural or regulatory statements link to the closest primary court, agency, statute, label or government source.
4. Update material changesReview dates are changed when the page receives a substantive factual or structural update—not simply to make content appear fresh.
